THE MEDICI FORTRESS

Jewel of sixteenth-century military architecture, the Medici Fortress of Arezzo stands on the San Donato hill.

A terrace overlooking the city, Pratomagno and Alpe di Catenaia. Different historical eras talk to each other in this exceptional lookout point, home of the forum for Etruscans and Romans. The first fortified citadel was built here between the 9th and 11th century. The remains of the majestic Church of San Donato in Cremona belong to that period. Porta Sant'Angelo is all that is left of the ancient Formwork wanted in the fourteenth century by the bishop count Guido Tarlati.

Star-shaped plan, suitable for the hill, and five bastions. The current Fortress was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the architect of the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. At that time the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de' Medici ruled also over Arezzo. Palaces, churches and towers near the work area were demolished. In this way the Florentines, barricading themselves in the Fortress, could more easily quell, with artillery shells, any possible revolts of the citizens of Arezzo. To fill that void was founded the Prato, the splendid park that hosts the Antiques Fair, every first weekend of every month.

The Spina bastion, triangular and pointed, looks towards the city. It is the only one that is not heart shaped, typical of Medici defensive structures. A large moat surrounded the complex, which could be accessed through three doors. Stone guardian and treasure chest of archaeological treasures, today the Fortress is a place of culture and relax. Location of art exhibitions and events and tourist destination with breathtaking views on the Casentino. A silent and evocative gem, on the roof of Arezzo.
