Gaio Cilnio National Archaeological Museum

National Archaeological Museum Gaio Cilnio Maecenas. The treasures of Etruscan and Roman Arezzo on display

To discover Etruscan and Roman Arezzo there is the National Archaeological Museum Gaio Cilnio Mecenate. It is the most important archaeological museum in Tuscany after the one in Florence and, together with the Roman Amphitheater of Arezzo, tells the story of the ancient origins of the city.

The tour winds through 26 rooms on two floors: on the ground floor we find the remains that trace the history of Arezzo from its foundation from the Etruscan Age to the Late Ancient Age. On the upper floor we find the special sections of paleontology, prehistory and early Middle Ages together with thematic ones with ceramics and bronzes.

The Archaeological Museum of Arezzo is a must-see place for its beautiful collection of Etruscan jewels found in the city necropolis of Poggio del Sole, for a gigantic decoration of an ancient pediment of a palace depicting battle scenes, found in today's Piazza San Jacopo, together with the finds of the magnificent Sanctuary of Castelsecco: decorative slabs, a stone altar and votive statuettes of infants.

There are two rarities that make it unique: the richest collection in the world of clay vases, called“coral vases”, produced in Arezzo between the mid-1st century BC and the mid-1st century AD which made Arezzo famous throughout antiquity and a very rare Euphronios Crater from 500 BC. which depicts the fight between Greeks and Amazons and in the shield of the warriors representing what would later become the symbol of the city: the Chimera.
